Fryeria menindie can be recognized according to following characteristics :
- the body is black with greyish blue tubercles
- in the centre of the mantle yellow tubercles consist in 3 broken alignments
- the edge of the mantle has numerous transverse black bands and bluish tubercles
- the rhinophores are yellow
- the foot is uniformly grey
The genus Fryeria can be recognized according to the position of anus, located under the mantle, while it is located in the dorsal midline in other phyllidiids.

Fryeria menindie can be mistaken for
Fryeria marindica, Phyllidia coelestis and Phyllidia varicosa. They can be distinguished by the tubercles which don't form any longitudinal ridge in F. menindie.

Fryeria menindie
could also be mistaken for Fryeria rueppelii and Fryeria guamensis :
- unlike F. menindie, F. rueppelii has a yellowish orange border to the mantle
- F. guamensis has rounded tubercles on the edge of the mantle, while F. menindie has tubercles consisting in transverse ridges
