Hypselodoris maculosa is very variable in colour and it can be mistaken for many other species having pale body with longitudinal white lines and purple spots. And only the rhinophores allow to characterise this species : they are pale and they have one, two or three transverse reddish orange bands.

This species has several synonyms :
- Chromodoris decorata (Risbec, 1928)
- Glossodoris xishaensis (Guang-Yu, 1975)

Particularly, Hypselodoris maculosa
could be mistaken for Thorunna australis who also has a reddish orange band on the rhinophores. They can be distinguished by the number of longitudinal white lines on the dorsum :
- T. australis has only 2 lines
- H. maculosa
has many more white lines (at least 4)
