Phyllidia coelestis is recognisable according to following characteristics :
- the body is bluish with 2 longitudinal ridges of the same colour, separated by 3 longitudinal black lines
- there are yellow tubercles on these 2 ridges and on the median black line
- the rhinophores are yellow
- the sole of the foot is uniform grey

Phyllidia coelestis
can be mistaken for Phyllidia varicosa and Fryeria marindica. They can be distinguished by the number of longitudinal black lines : P. varicosa has 4 ones, P. coelestis has 3 ones and F. marindica has only 2 lines. Moreover, P. coelestis is the only one having yellow tubercles on the black line.

Phyllidia coelestis
could also be mistaken for Fryeria rueppelii and Fryeria menindie. They can be distinguished by the anus position : it is on the mantle in P. varicosa, while it is under the mantle in Fryeria. And unlike P. coelestis, blue tubercles don't form any ridge in 2 Fryeria.
