Phyllidia elegans can be recognized according to following characteristics :
- the mantle is greyish white with pinkish white tubercles and with longitudinal and transverse black lines
- the pinkish tubercles are unequally sized :
the largest ones are compound and they consist in an aggregate of tubercles
- some tubercles are tipped with yellow
- the rhinophores are yellow
- the foot is grey with black lines on its sides ; the sole has a median black line


Phyllidia elegans
is similar to Phyllidia alyta and Phyllidia varicosa. They can be distinguished by the shape of their tubercles :
- P. alyta and P. varicosa has simple and uniform in size tubercles
- P. elegans has unequally sized tubercles and the largest ones are compound (because they consist in an aggregate of tubercles)
