Phyllidia ocellata is a yellow phyllidiid with white and black colour patterns. Several colour variants of this species are known :
- a yellow base with black undulations bordered with white on each side of the mantle : this pattern corresponds to the colour form called Phyllidia ocellata undula by Yonow in 1986. Yonow described it as a subspecies endemic to the Red Sea. But this colour form was also seen in Indian Ocean.
- a yellow base with white and black rings : it is a typical colour variant.
- a black base with yellow tubercles and with little or no white colour.
