Phyllidiella meandrina and its synonym P. sudanensis were considered by Brunckhorst (1998) to be aberrant specimens of P. annulata. But it seems that Phyllidiella meandrina is a full species. Here are its distinctive characteristics :
- the black body is covered with pink tubercles
- pink tubercles form 2 to 3 continuous bands encircling the mantle edge
- in the centre of the mantle, pink tubercles compose 2 rings : one with 2 more or less isolated pink tubercles, and the other with only one tubercle
- between the rhinophores, pink tubercles form an irregular '8' pattern
- the rhinophores are black
- the foot is blackish grey
